Expositions

The museum expositions present the development of the life and work of Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas. In the first room, Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas' different activities are introduced, the writer is presented as a poet, playwright, publicist, scientist and translator. Not only the books created by the writer are exhibited, but also works translated into foreign languages and research works of the writer's life and work by other authors, memoirs and books from the personal library of Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas.

Perhaps the most unique exhibits are Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas' letters written to the then Jonas Jablonskis secondary school teacher Kvederaitis, nieces Mykolaitytė-Junienė and Mykolaitytė-Štrimaitienė, a postcard sent to Granskas, Mykolaitis-Putinas' photograph with with the poet's autograph and inscription, given to his niece Gudaitytė-Žilvienė. Also on display are documents and envelopes with Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas' autographs, Baltakis' poem "Žemė ir dangus" ("Earth and Sky") dedicated to the writer.

In the first exhibition hall, you can also see authentic items that belonged to the writer's relatives: the mother's dowry chest, her woven towel and ribbon, parents' prayer books, a pepper grinder, a scarf given to Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas' mother, a map of the Pilotiškės village drawn by the writer's brother Juozas.

In the museum, the visitors can get to know how Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas' work and personality were interpreted in works of art. Eglė Valiūtė's stained glass windows "Falcons" and "Bells", paintings by artists Irena Katinienė, Bronius Leonavičius, Algirdas Steponavičius, Vytautas Valius, Aleksandras Kukujevas, a bust of Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas created by the sculptor Leonas Žuklys and a bronze medal of Algirdas Antanas Zokaitis are exhibited.

In the second hall, the exposition presents the academic work of Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas at the universities of Kaunas and Vilnius, the last period of his life, while the emphasis is placed on the perpetuation of the memory of the most important places in his life. The writer is presented as a prose writer: different editions of the novels "The Rebels", "Crisis" and "In the Shadow of the Altars" are exhibited. The visitors can view the first edition of the novel "In the Shadow of the Altars" and its translations into Polish and Russian.

Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas work is close to everyone – a person who thinks, reads, tries to unravel the riddle of human life, wanders between good and evil, light and darkness, peaks and depths, and has to make important decisions.
